Broadcaster Jack Tame has taken up a seat presenting 1News at Six on the weekend, it's been announced.

Tame will replace Melissa Stokes who was this week named as the new anchor of the weekday bulletin when Simon Dallow steps down at the end of the month.

Tame joined TVNZ as a 19-year-old reporter in 2006. He spent five years as the US Correspondent in New York covering two presidential elections, Olympic Games, hurricanes and the Sandy Hook mass shooting tragedy.

He was co-host of morning news show, Breakfast, and since 2019, has been the host of Q+A, TVNZ’s flagship political current affairs programme.

TVNZ's Chief News & Content Officer Nadia Tolich said Tame was one of the country's most accomplished broadcasters and interviewers.

"He’s a two-time best presenter winner at the NZ Screen Awards and was named Political Reporter of the Year at last year’s Voyagers," she said in a statement on Thursday.

"....His experience across news, current affairs and live reporting brings enormous depth to our coverage."

Dallow’s departure was firmed up this week when it was announced he would finish on 28 November after nearly 20 years reading the 6pm news.

Dallow, who previously worked as a barrister, joined TVNZ as a presenter in 1993. He appeared on Newsnight and other 1News bulletins. He worked on Agenda and Q+A before taking the helm at 1News at Six weeknights alongside former co-host Wendy Petrie.

Stokes has served as the weekend news anchor since 2019.
